Willa Cather as seen by the critics since 1920.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This thesis has been a research for all the possible criticisms of Willa Cather since 1920. It has been written to record how Willa Cather has been seen by critics throughout the four decades: 1920-1930, 1931-1940, and 1951-1960, each decade forming a chapter. The criticisms are introduced in chronological order and are divided into two broad sections, favorable and unfavorable criticisms. The research for this thesis concerns the changes and growths of Willa Cather's reputation, the stresses of the critics, and the acceptable and unacceptable qualities of Willa Cather. In this thesis no attempt has been made to distinguish between academic books and periodical articles in dealing with the criticisms.
