A collection of books from the Brownings' personal libraries.

This thesis is an annotated catalogue of the collection of books which belonged to Robert Browning or a member of his immediate family and which are now in the possession of Baylor University's Armstrong Browning Library. If books with two or more volumes are counted as one book, the total number of books in the collection is 188. The purpose of the thesis is to record pertinent information contained in the books, like signatures, presentation inscriptions, and annotations; to establish, whenever possible, whether there is any relationwhip between the author of a book and Robert Browning; to identify any person who presented a book to a member of the Browning family; and to attempt to discover whether any of the books were an influence on one or more of Robert Browning's poems. There is another potential value in the catalogue. It is known that the personal library of Robert Browning contained over 6000 books. This thesis is a systematic study of a small portion of Browning's books, and it is hoped that similar studies can be made for other collections of them. Thus, the thesis could possibly serve as a base for a more complete catalogue of all books that can be traced to the personal library of Robert Browning. The sections of the thesis which precede the catalogue proper are intended to give the reader an idea of the kind of information found in the catalogue and an idea of the format of the catalogue. Section III is intended mainly to furnish categories that suggest the variety of associations that different groups of books have to Robert Browning.
