Constructing reality from fantasy in The Wheel of Time and Anita Blake.

Abstract

The analysis of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series and Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series will reveal how fantasy allows the writer to display the individual self outside the mold of gender performance. Due to science fiction's ability to transcend reality, science fiction can depict the possibilities of living an individualistic life in which one is not condemned for being different. Characters in Hamilton and Jordan's series' do not act in stereotypical manners; on the contrary, male and female characters are diverse and complex. Specifically this paper will focus on Jordan and Hamilton's representation of gender as social construction thus revealing the performance of gender and will demonstrate how science fiction can effectively juxtapose the performance of gender against the individual need for identity.
