The stories people play : the gender relationship in story recall from newcomers in an organization.

Research continues to document psychological and communicative differences associated with gender. This thesis added to this tradition of research by investigating whether men and women recall different stories prior to entry in the workplace, and the sources of the stories. Questionnaires were distributed to 220 upper-level students. Results revealed that men and women recalled two basic kinds of stories, stories with morals, and stories without morals. Male and female subjects did not differ significantly in the stories they recalled about the workplace. However, chi-square analysis revealed a significant effect for the source of the stories, such that male subjects recalled stories primarily from male sources, and female subjects recalled stories primarily from female sources. The implications of these results, along with future research recommendations, are given in the thesis.
