Motivation and communication within the superior-subordinate dyad : a comparative study of volunteers and paid employees.

This study compared volunteers and paid employees in the areas of: (1) levels of intrinsic motivation, (2) perceptions of supervisors' decision making style, and (3) perceived compliance gaining/behavior regulation communication of supervisors. Subjects (n = 188 paid and 70 volunteer) provided information regarding the research areas via questionnaires distributed through their respective organizations. Differences between subject groups regarding intrinsic motivation and supervisors' communication activities were then explored. Results revealed that both paid and volunteer subjects were high in intrinsic motivation. Supervisors of volunteers used more participative decision making than supervisors of paid employees. Further, volunteers were more satisfied with their supervisors' decision making than were paid employees. Additionally, siginificant effects regarding compliance gaining behavior emerged such that strategies emphasizing the worth of the individual and of the work itself were used more frequently and were most motivating for volunteers. Results were interpreted and observations made based upon the results of the investigation.
