Bush's hedges on the environment : an analysis of George Bush's rhetoric on the environment.
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis thesis examines the environmental rhetoric of the Bush administration. The analysis encompasses the months from September 1989 through April 1990. It was discovered that Bush utilized several rhetorical stratagems in representing himself as the "environmental president" while maintaining his relationship to business. These strategies included redefinition, leaks, moderation, and policy efficiency. Chapter One outlines the research problem. Methodology and approach questions are explored. President Bush's February 5, 1990, speech on global warming and Earth Day, April 22, 1990, are noted as significant rhetorical periods. Chapter Two notes Bush's rhetorical activity before February 5, 1990. Bush's attempt to move the environment to the international agenda is noted. Examples of redefinition are also discovered. Chapter Three details the events surrounding Bush's controversial speech on global warming given February 5, 1990. Administrative infighting on environmental issues is documented. Leaks as a rhetorical stratagem are also discovered. Chapter Four concludes the paper with analysis of Bush's environmental rhetoric in March and April 1990. New terms in the redefinition process are noted. The chapter ends with a summary of thesis findings.
