Communities for liberation.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Gustavo Guetierrez and other Latin American catholic priests believe that there exists a great division between the rich and the poor, one that is especially painful in the context of Christianity. These priests express their views in their theology--liberation theology. The influence of this theology can been seen in many organizations in the United States. In 1972, Saul Alinsky, a grassroots writer and social activist, founded the Industrial Areas Foundation in Chicago, Illinois, an organization that caused an insurgence of community activist groups in the United States. Communities Organized For Public Service (COPS), founded in 1973 in San Antonia, Texas, is the largest and most successful of these groups. COPS recruits and educates mainly lower class, hispanic people in Alinsky style confrontational tactics and utilizes the literature of Latin American liberation theologians as a basis for its ideology. This work uses a videotape documentary as a critical analysis of the political motivations of COPS and an outline of the criticism encountered by the organization.
