Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis thesis developed from the writer's interest in the sales aspect of commercial television and its impact upon children. It consists of a study of the effectiveness of Action for Children's Television in encouraging the broadcast industry to employ additional self-regulation when broadcasting to children as a commercial audience. Chapter One gives an overall view of children as an audience and the general advertising standards related to children. The attitude of children toward commercial television is reviewed. Chapter Two reports how broadcasters are beginning to answer the growing demand for better and less commercialized children's television from the viewpoint of the broadcaster. Chapter Three presents a background of the history, aims, and developments of Action for Children's Television. It reviews their criticisms of the broadcast industry in relation to children. Finally, the thesis draws conclusions from this study and makes recommendations. Commercial television can become a credible form of advertising to the child. Recommendations which have been made to help the industry reach the children more effectively with less criticism from interest groups are reviewed and evaluated. A general analysis of the effect of Action for Children's Television upon the broadcast industry concludes this section.
