A comparison of the small group decision-making techniques of majority vote and consensus.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Researchers have long been concerned with the matter of decision-making within groups, but little attention has been paid to the actual process used in reaching decisions. This study proposed to fill this gap by examining the two processes of majority vote and consensus. Eighty subjects were divided into nine groups of approximately nine each. Each individual reached a decision concerning the best selective service system, and then the groups reached group decisions, three groups using the process of majority vote, three using consensus, and three without instructions as control groups. Questionnaires were administered to study the degrees of satisfaction, confidence, frustration, and involvement as related to the group decision, and any possible correlation of these variables with the group technique used. Significant differences were found between the groups on the variables of confidence and frustration, consensus groups having the highest level of both of these variables./
