The effects on indices of insincerity on Black listeners' evaluations of White speakers.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of indices of insincerity on listeners' evaluation of speakers' sincerity. The experimental group listened to a recorded speech containing indices of insincerity. The control group listened to the same speech from which the indices of insincerity had been deleted. Subjects rated the speaker's sincerity, agreement, trust and honesty on a nine-point scale. A simple t-test was used to analyze the data obtained. Significant difference at the .001 level was found on Questions I and III, sincerity and trust respectively. Significant difference at the .01 level was found on Questions II and IV, agreement and honesty respectively. The null hypotheses of the investigation were rejected and the following conclusion was drawn: Indices of insincerity will effect black listeners' evaluation of the white speakers' sincerity, trustworthiness, honesty and agreement.
