An interpretative analysis of John Dos Passos' U.S.A.

This thesis makes a literary analysis of John Dos Passos' U.S.A. from the viewpoint of oral interpretation. The study is intended to determine if Dos Passos' prose style is adaptable to oral presentation. The study begins with an account of the author's biography as related to his works and of his philosophy of writing. Chapter Two makes an investigation of both the positive and the negative criticism concerning Dos Passos' fiction and non-fiction. Chapter Three is a literary analysis of the three novels in U.S.A. The criteria for this analysis includes point of view, setting, characterization, plot, theme, structure, and style. The final chapter examines these elements as they relate to a Readers Theatre performance as it was performed November 18, 1970 on the Baylor University campus. Specific suggestions for a presentation of U.S.A. are also given in this chapter. It is suggested that the literary analysis of John Dos Passos' trilogy, U.S.A. be combined with the skills and techniques of oral interpretation to give listeners a better understanding of this literature.
