Ear asymmetry : the differential effects of white noise on the perception of voiced and voiceless CV nonsense syllables.

dc:description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate the differential effects of white noise on the perception of voiced and voiceless CV nonsense syllables. Under the experimental condition, one ear received CV syllables and white noise at a S/N ratio of +6 dB SPL while the contralateral ear received just white noise of equal intensity. It was posited that the resulting perceptual complexity would enhance the asymmetric hemispheric processing of linguistic stimuli. This hemispheric asymmetry would, in turn, manifest itself in ear asymmetry, more specifically, a right ear preponderance. Under the control condition, one ear received CV syllables and white noise at a S/N ratio of +6 dB SPL while the contralateral ear was not stimulated with white noise. Fifteen subjects participated in this study. The subjects forced choice responses were recorded on a multiple choice answer sheet. The data were analyzed by means of a type SPF-2.22 analysis of variance design. The data failed to support all hypotheses at an accepted level of significance. The null hypotheses of the investigation were not rejected. The results of this experiment seemed to indicate the presence of a ceiling or floor effect. Moreover, the possible influence of such variables as mode of stimulation and psychological set were discussed.
