Mark Twain's thought as revealed in his travel books.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to study the more prominent ideas expressed by Mark Twain in his travel books, to note the most characteristic thoughts, and to show how his thinking and attitudes changed and deepened as Twain advanced in years. The travel books used in this study are: The Innocents Abroud (1869), "Some Rambling Notes of an Idle Excursion" in Punch, Brothers, Punch and Other Sketches (1878), A Tramp Abroad (1880), Life on the Mississippi (1883), Following the Equator (1897), and Europe and Elsewhere (1923). In these books Twain was not writing fiction; he was free of plot and characterization. Therefore his ideas were expressed personally; and from these travel books, as studied in chronological order, we see the more serious aspects of the man’s nature gradually replace the exuberance of youth. An effort has been made to place the most prominent ideas under such headings as religion, social ideas, cultural conceptions, and political opinions so that this study might seek to show that Mark Twain developed as a thinker through the years, as a philosophical outlook replaced the early Western humor.
