Women's coverage in the 1976 and 1996 Olympics : a content analysis of three weekly U.S. magazines.

This study examines the changes in coverage of women Olympians from 1976 to 1996 in Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated magazines. The hypotheses tested explored research questions concerning the number of female Olympians to appear on the cover of the chosen magazines, the number of women's events covered, and the percentage of Olympic stories focusing on women. The hypotheses suggested that coverage in these areas was greater in 1996 than in 1976, reflecting the progress in gender equity in national and international athletics since Title IX was passed in 1972. The results of the study, however, show that despite an overall increase in Olympic coverage in the magazines, coverage of women Olympians did not significantly increase. While some progress is being made, gender equity in Olympic coverage has not yet been achieved.
