The effects of pagination on editors and satisfaction with technology at newspapers.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Pagination is a process of newspaper production that includes computerized output of a newspaper through a networked system in the newsroom. The following electronic survey study sought to elucidate whether reported measures for easing the discontent with pagination's implementation in the newsroom were of any help within the past decade, which is when most newspapers fully adopted the system. A census of eighty-seven Texas newspapers surveyed produced a twenty-five percent response rate for news editors and responses from eight copy editors in a snowball mailing. Results show that time constraints do tend to be restricted to system failures and late-breaking news editing. Educational opportunities do not necessarily help familiarize workers with pagination. Desk reorganization has not necessarily helped with pagination specific problems, and smaller papers are not more prone to organizational problems. Overall satisfaction with pagination and its uses among editors is high.
