The way to diversity under party control : two Chinese newspapers in 1975 and in 1996.

This thesis studied changes in two Chinese newspapers before and after the launch of the Deng Xiaoping-led economic reform, by content analyzing one week's new coverage in 1975 and in 1996. The national daily, People's Daily and the local daily carried a greater number of news items in 1996, covered a wider range of topics, and had shifted from their focus from politics and ideology to economics and relaxation. Both newspapers had achieved a reasonable balance in the amount of domestic, dual and foreign news, and in that of national, regional and provincial, and local news. The change in source usage shows the partial switch from purely educational journalism to informational journalism. Signs of party journalism remained in both newspapers. People's Daily covered more news of politics, ideology and economics, while the local daily, with more editorial freedom, covered higher proportions of entertainment and daily life matters.
