China turns west : Central Asia's new player in the great game.

China's emergence in Central Asia is primarily motivated by its energy security, regional stability, and its geopolitical position with the United States. This study seeks to analyze China's involvement in Central Asia in order to determine along what paths its involvement will change in the future. Important theoretical implications for Chinese foreign policy behavior arise such as the duplicity of actors involved in the foreign policy formulation and implementation stages. Analytically and methodologically rigorous research is needed in this arena to not only fill in the gaps in the existing literature, but also to obtain efficiency and clarity in the explanation of this new phenomenon. This study concludes that China has acquired cooperation from Central Asia in its long-term energy security and regional stability. However, it has not invested its current energy security in the region nor has China found significant cooperation in the U.S.'s geopolitical positioning in Central Asia.
