Traveling exhibits : history, utilization, and changing perceptions.
Abstract
dc:description.abstractBeginning with the earliest form of traveling exhibits, through its evolution and revolution of the 1970s, to the recent trends of for-profit enterprises, traveling exhibits have become increasingly popular to museums, resulting in a change of public and institutional perception of museums. A review of the literature traces the historical development of traveling exhibits and documents their increase in popularity among U.S. museums. An examination of the number of traveling exhibit agencies in 1978, and again in 2003, shows the result of supply and demand. Further investigation of the use of traveling exhibits in recently opened museums supports the thesis.
