Educational programming in American art museums : the balance of studio art and art criticism in programs designed for school children.

Art museums are dynamic institutions committed to educating the visitor about the works of art and about the museums themselves. The methods for achieving these goals with respect to the student visitor have changed significantly over time due to the philosophies and teaching methods of art education. The goal of this thesis is to determine if programming content in art museums has shifted away from art making activities toward looking at and talking about the original works of art in the galleries. The analysis begins with program descriptions gathered in the 1973/74 school year for The Art Museum as Educator (1978), continues with published program examples of the 1980s and 1990s, and rounds out the study with a survey conducted in 2001 to document program content. The outcome of these activities is the documentation of trends in program design, the influences of the noted changes, and recommendations for future study.
