History museums in Texas acknowledge the value of oral history projects in their museums, however the potential of this tool has not been fully realized in its integration into exhibits, research, and programming due to factors such as time, staff, and budget limitations. Initially, an informal survey was taken to illuminate the current level of use of oral history in Texas museums. The survey produced the opportunity to identify where some successful efforts have been made and to do case studies of five of these museums. Examples of effective use and implementation at various levels are revealed through the examination of these five institutions of different sizes and purposes. The evaluation of the case studies culminates with suggestions for more effective implementation of oral history projects in other museums.
