Part 79) was intended to ensure the longterm management and care of these resources, lack of funding, lack of enforcement, and lack of compliance, have resulted in collections throughout the United States to be at risk of being lost through deterioration, mismanagement, and neglect. This situation represents the curation crisis of the archaeology and museum fields. This crisis is approached by quantifying critical issues as reported by State Historical Preservation Officers (SHPOs) and representatives from CRM repositories. Analysis of the information exposes where the greatest problems exist, as well as what corrective actions have the greatest potential to achieve the intent of existing legislation to protect cultural materials.
