The struggle for succession, 1921-1925 : Leon Trotsky and Joseph Stalin.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky were the most significant and the most influential among the men whom the world at large regarded as masters of the Kremlin. The tactics which Joseph Stalin used with such success against Trotsky, first to silence and then to reduce him to complete helplessness, he used against Lenin, the moment the latter fell sick in 1922. People on the outside long regarded the attack on Trotsky as the work of the "Triumvirate"; Kamenev, Zinoviev, and Stalin. This distracted attention from the fact that Stalin was pulling the wires. Before his death, Lenin said very positively that because of certain traits of character, Stalin would ruin the party if ever he attained to leadership. Nevertheless, Stalin ascended to greater and greater power, and history has yet to judge whether Lenin was right. Following an introductory chapter acquainting the reader with the period in history under discussion, the thesis attempts to present an accurate and objective inquiry into the events which occurred during the period of 1921 to early 1925 between the two leading successors of Lenin. The struggle between Stalin and Trotsky is carefully analyzed with the intention of providing more understanding as to why Stalin was ultimately victorious.
