Some aspects of the problem of teaching English composition in American colleges and universities.

This study has for its purpose: (1) to learn something of the importance given to English composition in American colleges and universities; (2) to notice some material that may be of use to instructors of college and college preparatory English; and (3) to present some suggestions for improving our American English composition work. "A number of difficulties stand in the way of my telling anybody how to teach." These words of Professor Sidney Cox of Dartmouth College, may serve as an excellent text for this paper. The experience of ten years as a secondary school English teacher and of a summer as a freshman and sophomore college instructor, causes one to approach, with some temerity, the task of offering to seasoned college professors anything of substantial value along the lines indicated above. What I hope to accomplish is to hew out a stone that may be offered as a unit in a structure that is in the process of erection. The specific divisions of the study are: (1) the results of a questionnaire that I have sent out during the past year to all the colleges and universities of America; (2) numerous abstracts, condensations, and epitomes of articles and of books that bear on the subject of college and college preparatory composition work; (3) a study of some of the methods used by instructors in college preparatory schools; (4) a bibliography of several hundred references to articles and books that may be of value to composition instructors; and (5) some suggestive conclusions from the material gathered.
