dc:description.abstractThe survival of Typha domingensis under complete submergence was investigated by observing and recording vegetation data in a constructed wetland after a natural flood, followed by two controlled experiments designed to simulate deep flood conditions. In the observational study, rhizomes from 750 Typha ramets were methodically unearthed to reveal that none of the individual plants survived a multi-week flood, though a few live shoots were found in the area. In the experimental study, potted Typha were completely submerged in a fiberglass tank for two to six weeks. Nearly half of the plants in the experimental tank survived two weeks under water, but the maximum duration for a surviving specimen was four weeks. Managers should know how Typha responds to complete submergence because flooding may be used to control it, whether its presence is desirable (as used in wastewater treatment wetlands) or unwelcome because of its aggressive growth habit.
