Journey and destination : the process of creating Jacyln Backhaus's Men on Boats.

This thesis details the creation of the Baylor Theatre production of Jacyln Backhaus's Men on Boats in the spring of 2024. Specifically, this thesis examines my work as a director and collaborator. Within this work is an analysis of Backhaus's other plays, a brief production history of Men on Boats, and a dramatic analysis of the text itself through the lens of Richard Slotkin's notion of the mythology of the American frontier. In addition, this thesis will explore the collaboration between the designers and myself to realize the world of the play onstage. The rehearsal process with its successes and setbacks is also discussed. The culmination of this inquiry is the critical feedback and reception from faculty and audiences, as well as a personal reflection. The main purpose of this thesis is to evaluate how directing Men on Boats strengthened my theatre-making skills and revealed areas in which I can improve.
