Whakapapa as episto-methodology - Decolonising economies through a place-based kin study of Whakatōhea kuku (green-lipped mussels)

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Māori economies have their own distinct foundations, which exist largely outside of capitalocentric imaginaries. Despite this, dominant conceptualisations paint them as some variant of capitalism. In Aotearoa (New Zealand), theoretical scholarship highlights the importance of re-framing Māori economies in a way that is reflective of te ao Māori. This thesis aims to contribute to the project of decolonising Māori economies through a focus on whakapapa. It adopts a whakapapa-based approach to examine Whakatōhea kuku economies, investigating obligations involved, more-than-human agency, and the diversity of ways that livelihoods are generated. This whakapapa-based exploration of Whakatōhea kuku economies reveals eight key elements of decolonised Māori economies. Ultimately, this thesis develops novel Māori economic episto-methodology and outlines pathways for understanding and practising decolonised Māori economies.
