Childhood and Social Movements: A Case Study of the National Movement of Children and Youths Peace Managers in Colombia

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The intersection between childhood and social movements was an unexplored field of research before 2019. However, over the last 5 years, it seems that scholars have “discovered” childhood in social movements, creating a vibrant new field of research that promises new understandings. The recent research has focused on the working children social movement, the National Movement of Street Boys and Girls, the Fridays For Future or the March for Our Lives, but fewer than a handful of works have considered the Movimiento Nacional de Niños, Niñas, Adolescentes y Jóvenes Gestores de Paz (National Movement of Children and Youths Peace Managers in Colombia). This study aims to understand how the participation of seven youths in the National Movement of Children and Youths Peace Managers (National Movement) in Colombia changed their habitus, capital composition and their experiences and ideas of childhood. Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus, capitals, field and social practices are the epistemological tools for analysing the 28 online interviews conducted with the youths (aged 16–24). Specifically, to explore changes in the youths’ experiences and ideas of childhood, this study examines the development of the concept of childhood in Colombia and sketches a possible genealogy of the “syncretic childhoods” that are the result of Colombia’s colonial history. Furthermore, it reconstructs the origins of the National Movement to assess the impact of NGOs and international institutions in its formation and the dissemination of new Western conceptions of childhood that have become an integral part of the notions of childhood that circulate within the National Movement.
