The analysis focuses not only in cataloguing media practices, but also explores how Russia and Ukraine, as the two principal state actors, construct, transmit and reinforce their official positions through different means of communication. Additionally, this study investigates how these strategies are used to shape and redefine the perception of this war among both domestic populations and the international community emphasizing the role of information as a parallel battlefield in modern warfare. This analysis is based on theoretical frameworks from communication studies, such as the framing theory and the propaganda model to interpret the strategies used from Russia and Ukraine. The research is structured around three analytical levels that shed a light into these distinct dimensions of the information war. The first level investigates the utilization of traditional mass media as mechanisms of distributing information that are either directly state- controlled or are ideologically aligned with them. This framework is used to showcase the similarities and differences in the ways each side has utilized news broadcasting, political commentary and structured programming in order to influence their audiences’ interpretation of the war. This comparison between the practices demonstrates how traditional media continue to influence the masses, despite the rise of the more decentralized digital forms of communication. The second level of analysis focuses on social media and their increasingly pivotal role in the shaping of fields of both modern informational warfare and public diplomacy. Specifically, the study explores how information circulates in real time, allowing not only governments but also ordinary citizens and non-state actors to participate in the construction and the deconstruction of war narratives. The immediacy and multimodal nature of these platforms, ranging from simple text updates to the widespread sharing of images and videos captured directly from the battlefield, creates an environment that shows that narratives are not only broadcast from mass media but also co-produced through user engagement. This analysis also highlights the dynamics of mutual communication that these platforms enable: while governments may seek to convey coherent and authentic messages, users retain the ability to disseminate, reinterpret, or challenge these messages, thereby influencing the broader information landscape. The third level of analysis is devoted to a comparative examination of communication strategies as they evolved during successive phases of the conflict, beginning with the outbreak of full-scale war in February 2022, continuing through the subsequent periods of escalation and reaching the current stage of protracted confrontation. Tracing these shifts in communication the study reveals how narratives are continuously recalibrated in response to developments on the battlefield, political pressures and international reactions. This highlights how both sides adapt their communication tools to changing circumstances, ensuring that their messages remain resonant and persuasive to their target audience. A particular focus of the study is the integration of advanced technological means in the information struggle, specifically the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and the dissemination of fake or falsified content, commonly referred to as "fake news". This section examines the features of these technological tools, the ways in which they have been used by state and non- state actors and the profound implications they have for broader perceptions of truth, credibility and authority in times of armed conflict. AI-driven mechanisms not only contribute to the large- scale dissemination of content, but also to the creation of convincing yet misleading visual and textual materials, such as deepfake videos, which blur the lines between authentic documentation and digital forgery. The study highlights how these media, when used in an environment already characterized by heightened uncertainty and conflicting claims, exert a significant influence on the cognitive frameworks through which the public interprets the reality of war. This, in turn, raises urgent questions about the resilience of democratic societies, the effectiveness of regulatory frameworks and the ability of individuals to exercise informed judgment in the face of an overwhelming flow of information. The overall aim of this research is to shed light on the communication strategies used by the two opposing sides and to highlight the crucial role played by both traditional mass media and digital networks in the construction, the dissemination and stabilization of war narratives. The examination of these mechanisms depicts that information is transformed into a weapon of political and psychological significance, which contributes to a deeper understanding of the contemporary phenomenon often referred to as “information warfare”. This phenomenon demonstrates that contemporary conflicts are not only conducted through the use of physical violence, but also through the management of perception and the struggle to define the legitimate interpretations of actions. The findings of the research highlight the dual nature of information as a means of communication and as a field of conflict. On the one hand, information flows enable states to engage in persuasion practices that mobilize support, maintain morale, and justify strategic decisions. On the other hand, these same flows are vulnerable to manipulation, falsification, and weaponization, which in turn reinforces mistrust, polarization, and confusion within and between societies. The case of Ukraine shows how effective communication can generate unprecedented levels of international solidarity and material assistance, while the case of Russia demonstrates the ability of a state to maintain internal cohesion through the control of the narrative environment. In both cases, the study demonstrates that information is not secondary to war, but rather an integral part of its development. Ultimately, this research contributes to the understanding of the transformation of warfare in the 21st century. By placing the conflict in Ukraine within the broader context of global information practices, it highlights the enduring importance of communication as a central element of geopolitical confrontation. Furthermore, by analyzing the communication strategies of both Russia and Ukraine, it provides valuable insights into how state and non- state actors are adapting to the challenges and opportunities of a hyper-connected digital world. In this way, the study draws attention to the long-term consequences of communication management in shaping public opinion at both the national and international levels, influencing not only the immediate course of a war, but also the post-conflict environment in which future political arrangements will be negotiated."]},{"key":"dc:title","label":"Title","values":["Ψηφιακά πεδία μάχης: Η χρήση Μέσων Μαζικής Ενημέρωσης και Μέσων Κοινωνικής Δικτύωσης στον πόλεμο στην Ουκρανία"]}]}],"canonical_facts":{"dc:creator":["Παπαγιάννης Ιωάννης","Papagiannis Ioannis"],"dc:date":["2026"],"dc:description":["Η παρούσα μελέτη εξετάζει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο τα εμπλεκόμενα μέρη στον πόλεμο της Ουκρανίας αξιοποιούν τα μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης και τα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης για την προώθηση των αφηγημάτων τους.
