Ecological awareness is treated not as a single disposition but as a multidimensional competence that integrates conceptual understanding of human-environment interdependence, value commitments, emotional engagement, practical problem-solving, and a sense of efficacy and responsibility. Building on the international progression from Environmental Education (EE) to Education for Sustainable Development (ΕΕΑ), the study argues that schools are uniquely positioned to connect everyday learning with the broader aims of sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), provided that ecological education is designed as a wholeschool, community-linked endeavor rather than an isolated subject or occasional project. Methodologically, the study is a structured literature-based synthesis drawing on major databases and policy reports to distill what works across diverse contexts. Inclusion criteria privileged peer-reviewed studies and well-documented programs that report educational outcomes (knowledge, skills, attitudes, participation) and resource outcomes (e.g., water, energy, waste metrics). The analysis coded each source across three dimensions: (i) the environmental representations and data students engaged with (e.g., simple geospatial layers, school-level time series), (ii) the pedagogical and organizational designs employed (inquiry, project-based learning, cross-curricular integration, student governance), and (iii) the forms of assessment and feedback used to make learning and impact visible. Synthesizing these strands yields a coherent design language that teachers and school leaders can adopt without specialized equipment or advanced technical prerequisites. At the level of pedagogy, the review finds that approaches anchored in authentic local questions are consistently effective. When students investigate concrete problems, such as recurrent pooling of rainwater at a school entrance, excessive electricity use in specific rooms, or low recycling performance, they are more likely to connect concepts with action. Project-based and experiential learning provides the necessary structure: students frame a question, assemble relevant information, collect or access basic data, analyze patterns, propose a feasible intervention, and evaluate results. Three resource domains, water, energy, and waste, emerge as particularly suitable because they are directly observable, measurable with simple means, and closely tied to daily school routines. Within each domain, the thesis proposes practical indicators (e.g., daily liters per capita, kilowatt-hours per week, kilograms of landfill waste vs. diverted materials), straightforward monitoring routines, and prompts for reflection that help students turn numbers into reasoned judgments rather than mere record-keeping. A central claim of the thesis is that elementary data practices and simple models can substantially enhance ecological education without overburdening teachers. Students can learn to keep consistent logs from existing school meters or low-cost sensors, to conduct basic quality checks, and to use accessible tools (spreadsheets or widely available open-source software) to visualize trends and compare scenarios. Modeling is introduced at a level that clarifies ideas without demanding advanced mathematics: for instance, estimating expected runoff for a paved courtyard under a typical storm, projecting potential energy savings from changing lighting schedules, or comparing waste-sorting outcomes before and after a communication campaign. In all cases, uncertainty is treated explicitly but simply, through replication, ranges, or confidence bands, so that conclusions are appropriately cautious and decisions remain transparent and revisable. The emphasis is on parsimony, clarity of assumptions, and reproducibility of steps, not on specialized algorithms or high-cost simulations. It's important to view the school as a “space of policy in practice,” the thesis highlights organizational conditions that enable continuity. Teachers benefit from compact planning templates that embed short action cycles (plan–do–study–act) into the timetable, shared repositories of ready-to-adapt activities, and assessment rubrics that capture not only subject knowledge but also collaboration, systems thinking, and ethical reasoning. Student participation is strengthened when roles and routines are formalized, e.g., water or energy monitors who report weekly to a student council, and when the school organizes public moments (assemblies, exhibitions) where methods, findings, and recommendations are presented. Partnerships with municipalities, utilities, local environmental centers and community organizations supply relevance, resources, and accountability. External actors may provide technical advice, facilitate site visits, or co-host events where students showcase their work and receive feedback. Importantly, the same data structures are used for diagnosis support monitoring after an intervention, enabling simple before and after or interrupted timeseries comparisons that foster a culture of learning rather than one-off campaigns. The psychosocial dimension is addressed as an integral component, not an add-on. Adolescents often report distress or powerlessness in the face of environmental problems, the literature indicates that structured, collaborative projects that connect emotion with efficacy can transform worry into constructive agency. Accordingly, the thesis recommends integrating socialemotional learning with ecological themes. These will include naming emotions, building place attachment through local fieldwork, and practicing deliberation when values conflict (for example, between convenience and long-term ecological integrity). Identity formation is treated as central. When students experience themselves as legitimate contributors to the school community, through recognized roles, visible feedback, and concrete improvements, pro-environmental attitudes stabilize and are more likely to generalize beyond the school setting. The Greek context is examined as a boundary condition for implementation. Policy frameworks increasingly reference ΕΕΑ and SDG 4.7, and there is an established tradition of environmental programs and active teacher communities. At the same time, constraints include limited planning time, competing curricular demands, variable access to transport for fieldwork, and uneven technical support. To address these realities, the thesis proposes a phased adoption model. Phase I consists of quick-start micro-projects that fit within a week and culminate in a concise technical brief, Phase II consolidates practices through grade-band maps that specify annual resource themes and cross-subject connections, accompanied by shared templates and rubrics, Phase III institutionalizes roles, targets, and public exhibitions so that successful practices persist beyond individual champions. Equity is a cross-cutting concern. Designs should account for differences in student access to resources and opportunities, ensuring that participation is feasible for all and that benefits are fairly distributed. The contribution of the thesis is threefold. Conceptually, it offers a precise yet accessible definition of ecological awareness as action oriented competence, linking cognitive, affective, and ethical dimensions with practical routines for problem solving. Methodologically, it clarifies how a literature based approach can be used to extract portable design elements, data routines, simple models, assessment rubrics, and school-level governance mechanisms, that respect the limits of time and infrastructure in typical schools. Practically, it assembles a set of implementable components. Planning templates should align with the school timetable, lists of candidate indicators and basic measurement protocols, examples of student roles and reporting formats, and guidance for forming and sustaining partnerships with local institutions. Limitations are acknowledged. As a synthesis of published work and program documentation, the conclusions depend on reported evidence and may be biased toward successful cases. Transferability across schools with different infrastructures and socio-economic profiles may be uneven. Future research should include design based cycles in Greek secondary schools to test the phased model under real constraints, gather longitudinal data on action competence (decision quality, persistence of practices, measurable resource outcomes) and examine the stability of routines when staff or leadership change. Even with these caveats, convergent findings support the core claim. When secondary schools integrate modest data practices, simple modeling, and participatory governance into their everyday routines, ecological education shifts from episodic activities to a durable culture of sustainable practice. This in effect will help improve knowledge and attitudes while cultivating transferable skills in reasoning, collaboration, and civic responsibility."]},{"key":"dc:title","label":"Title","values":["Καλλιέργεια Οικολογικής Συνείδησης στη Δευτεροβάθμια Εκπαίδευση: Θεωρητικές Προσεγγίσεις και Εκπαιδευτικές Πρακτικές για τη Βιώσιμη Διαχείριση των Φυσικών Πόρων."]}]}],"canonical_facts":{"dc:creator":["Αγγέλης Νικόλαος","Angelis Nikolaos"],"dc:date":["2026"],"dc:description":["Η παρούσα μεταπτυχιακή διατριβή διερευνά συστηματικά και αναλυτικά τη σημασία και τον ρόλο της οικολογικής εκπαίδευσης στη σύγχρονη δευτεροβάθμια εκπαίδευση, με απώτερο σκοπό τη διαμόρφωση οικολογικά μορφομένων πολιτών και την προώθηση βιώσιμων στάσεων και πρακτικών (Kemmis & Mutton, 2012) (Hyseni Spahiu, Korça, & Lindemann-Matthies, 2014). Ecological awareness is treated not as a single disposition but as a multidimensional competence that integrates conceptual understanding of human-environment interdependence, value commitments, emotional engagement, practical problem-solving, and a sense of efficacy and responsibility. Building on the international progression from Environmental Education (EE) to Education for Sustainable Development (ΕΕΑ), the study argues that schools are uniquely positioned to connect everyday learning with the broader aims of sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), provided that ecological education is designed as a wholeschool, community-linked endeavor rather than an isolated subject or occasional project. Methodologically, the study is a structured literature-based synthesis drawing on major databases and policy reports to distill what works across diverse contexts. Inclusion criteria privileged peer-reviewed studies and well-documented programs that report educational outcomes (knowledge, skills, attitudes, participation) and resource outcomes (e.g., water, energy, waste metrics). The analysis coded each source across three dimensions: (i) the environmental representations and data students engaged with (e.g., simple geospatial layers, school-level time series), (ii) the pedagogical and organizational designs employed (inquiry, project-based learning, cross-curricular integration, student governance), and (iii) the forms of assessment and feedback used to make learning and impact visible. Synthesizing these strands yields a coherent design language that teachers and school leaders can adopt without specialized equipment or advanced technical prerequisites. At the level of pedagogy, the review finds that approaches anchored in authentic local questions are consistently effective. When students investigate concrete problems, such as recurrent pooling of rainwater at a school entrance, excessive electricity use in specific rooms, or low recycling performance, they are more likely to connect concepts with action. Project-based and experiential learning provides the necessary structure: students frame a question, assemble relevant information, collect or access basic data, analyze patterns, propose a feasible intervention, and evaluate results. Three resource domains, water, energy, and waste, emerge as particularly suitable because they are directly observable, measurable with simple means, and closely tied to daily school routines. Within each domain, the thesis proposes practical indicators (e.g., daily liters per capita, kilowatt-hours per week, kilograms of landfill waste vs. diverted materials), straightforward monitoring routines, and prompts for reflection that help students turn numbers into reasoned judgments rather than mere record-keeping. A central claim of the thesis is that elementary data practices and simple models can substantially enhance ecological education without overburdening teachers. Students can learn to keep consistent logs from existing school meters or low-cost sensors, to conduct basic quality checks, and to use accessible tools (spreadsheets or widely available open-source software) to visualize trends and compare scenarios. Modeling is introduced at a level that clarifies ideas without demanding advanced mathematics: for instance, estimating expected runoff for a paved courtyard under a typical storm, projecting potential energy savings from changing lighting schedules, or comparing waste-sorting outcomes before and after a communication campaign. In all cases, uncertainty is treated explicitly but simply, through replication, ranges, or confidence bands, so that conclusions are appropriately cautious and decisions remain transparent and revisable. The emphasis is on parsimony, clarity of assumptions, and reproducibility of steps, not on specialized algorithms or high-cost simulations. It's important to view the school as a “space of policy in practice,” the thesis highlights organizational conditions that enable continuity. Teachers benefit from compact planning templates that embed short action cycles (plan–do–study–act) into the timetable, shared repositories of ready-to-adapt activities, and assessment rubrics that capture not only subject knowledge but also collaboration, systems thinking, and ethical reasoning. Student participation is strengthened when roles and routines are formalized, e.g., water or energy monitors who report weekly to a student council, and when the school organizes public moments (assemblies, exhibitions) where methods, findings, and recommendations are presented. Partnerships with municipalities, utilities, local environmental centers and community organizations supply relevance, resources, and accountability. External actors may provide technical advice, facilitate site visits, or co-host events where students showcase their work and receive feedback. Importantly, the same data structures are used for diagnosis support monitoring after an intervention, enabling simple before and after or interrupted timeseries comparisons that foster a culture of learning rather than one-off campaigns. The psychosocial dimension is addressed as an integral component, not an add-on. Adolescents often report distress or powerlessness in the face of environmental problems, the literature indicates that structured, collaborative projects that connect emotion with efficacy can transform worry into constructive agency. Accordingly, the thesis recommends integrating socialemotional learning with ecological themes. These will include naming emotions, building place attachment through local fieldwork, and practicing deliberation when values conflict (for example, between convenience and long-term ecological integrity). Identity formation is treated as central. When students experience themselves as legitimate contributors to the school community, through recognized roles, visible feedback, and concrete improvements, pro-environmental attitudes stabilize and are more likely to generalize beyond the school setting. The Greek context is examined as a boundary condition for implementation. Policy frameworks increasingly reference ΕΕΑ and SDG 4.7, and there is an established tradition of environmental programs and active teacher communities. At the same time, constraints include limited planning time, competing curricular demands, variable access to transport for fieldwork, and uneven technical support. To address these realities, the thesis proposes a phased adoption model. Phase I consists of quick-start micro-projects that fit within a week and culminate in a concise technical brief, Phase II consolidates practices through grade-band maps that specify annual resource themes and cross-subject connections, accompanied by shared templates and rubrics, Phase III institutionalizes roles, targets, and public exhibitions so that successful practices persist beyond individual champions. Equity is a cross-cutting concern. Designs should account for differences in student access to resources and opportunities, ensuring that participation is feasible for all and that benefits are fairly distributed. The contribution of the thesis is threefold. Conceptually, it offers a precise yet accessible definition of ecological awareness as action oriented competence, linking cognitive, affective, and ethical dimensions with practical routines for problem solving. Methodologically, it clarifies how a literature based approach can be used to extract portable design elements, data routines, simple models, assessment rubrics, and school-level governance mechanisms, that respect the limits of time and infrastructure in typical schools. Practically, it assembles a set of implementable components. Planning templates should align with the school timetable, lists of candidate indicators and basic measurement protocols, examples of student roles and reporting formats, and guidance for forming and sustaining partnerships with local institutions. Limitations are acknowledged. As a synthesis of published work and program documentation, the conclusions depend on reported evidence and may be biased toward successful cases. Transferability across schools with different infrastructures and socio-economic profiles may be uneven. Future research should include design based cycles in Greek secondary schools to test the phased model under real constraints, gather longitudinal data on action competence (decision quality, persistence of practices, measurable resource outcomes) and examine the stability of routines when staff or leadership change. Even with these caveats, convergent findings support the core claim. When secondary schools integrate modest data practices, simple modeling, and participatory governance into their everyday routines, ecological education shifts from episodic activities to a durable culture of sustainable practice. This in effect will help improve knowledge and attitudes while cultivating transferable skills in reasoning, collaboration, and civic responsibility."],"dc:identifier":["uoadl:5368154","https://pergamos.lib.uoa.gr/uoa/dl/object/5368154"],"dc:language":["Ελληνικά","Greek"],"dc:subject":["Θετικές Επιστήμες","Science"],"dc:title":["Καλλιέργεια Οικολογικής Συνείδησης στη Δευτεροβάθμια Εκπαίδευση: Θεωρητικές Προσεγγίσεις και Εκπαιδευτικές Πρακτικές για τη Βιώσιμη Διαχείριση των Φυσικών Πόρων."],"dc:type":["born_digital_postgraduate_thesis","Διπλωματική Εργασία","Postgraduate Thesis"]},"updated_at":"2026-07-24T01:02:02Z"}
