An estimated 30.3 million people have diabetes in the United States (US) (Diabetes Prevention Program Research Group, 2009). In New Mexico, the prevalence of diagnosed diabetes has increased twofold between 2004 and 2017 (New Mexico Indicator-Based Information System [NM-IBIS], n.d.). To decrease risk of mortality and morbidity from diabetes, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends that every diabetic patient follow the diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) program. Fifteen charts were audited at a New Mexico Primary care Clinic, with zero DSMES utilized identifying a gap in care.Purpose. The purpose of this quality improvement was to educate nurse practitioners on the DSMES process and their role in educating type II diabetic patients. Methods. Participants involved were two nurse practitioners in a local clinic in Clovis, NM. A pre-survey was utilized to assess their current knowledge on DSMES. Once the pre-survey was completed, the participants viewed an educational PowerPoint on DSMES. Following the PowerPoint, they completed a post-survey assessing their acquired knowledge and willingness to implement DSMES in practice. Results. The project was implemented at a clinic in Clovis, NM. Based on the responses provided in the pre- and post-surveys, providers benefited from the educational PowerPoint on DSMES. The individual qualitative answers collected show increased provider understanding, acceptance, and willingness to implement DSMES in practice. Conclusions. The quality improvement project which utilized a presurvey and postsurvey in conjunction with an educational PowerPoint intervention was effective in increasing knowledge of DSMES and the likelihood of the providers utilizing DSMES in future practice.","abstract_html":"Background.
