The main content of this thesis is concerned with work which has been done towards the solution of the problem. At the time a choice of machine for injection was made the requirement that the injection energy should be in the region of 8 Mev ruled out Cockroft-Walton and electrostatic generations. Thus the choice was between a linear accelerator and a cyclotron. As the resources of the laboratory were to be heavily committed in building the proton synchrotron itself it was felt that it would be better to avoid such an undertaking as the construction of a linear accelerator if a cyclotron could meet the situation. Having on hand a magnet which was used for the model experimental homopolar generator, and which was suitable for a 30 inch cyclotron, further supported the selection of this machine.
