Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the best fitting combination of cicer milkvetch (Astragalus deer L.), crested wheatgrass {Agropyron cristatum (L.) Gaertn) and intermediate wheatgrass {Agropyron intermedium (Host) Beauv.) as a mixture in use of the planted pastures under dryland conditions of Central Anatolia. The research was established as a completely randomised block design with the four replications, and was conducted in the years between 1995 and 1997 at the Haymana İkizce Experimental Station of The Research Center for the Field Crops. Total of the eleven combinations of cicer milkvetch, crested wheatgrass and intermediate wheatgrass made up the mixtures as at the ratios of 20, 40, 60, 80 % and pure stand for each species. The seedling numbers of the species among the mixture combinations were significantly different Crested wheatgrass had the highest seedling number as 96.75 per square metre. The differences of seedling dry matter of the species were not significant In these mixtures, according to number of the plant and dry matter yield the ratio of species within botanical compositions significantly differed from each ivother. The plant height of cicer milkvctch, crested whcatgrass and intermediate wheatgrass were 44.54, 75.51 and 88.77 cm, respectively. They had the main stem height of 52.59, 79.28 ve 92.48 cm, and the main stem diameter of 2.97, 2.15 and 3.56 mm, the main stem leave number of 7.35, 3.84 and 3.66, and the crown diameter of 20.76, 16.17 and 29.33 cm, respectively. Crested wheatgras grown as a pure stand produced 539.14 kg/da hay, whereas the mixture consisted of 40 % cicer milkvetch + 60 % crested wheatgrass possessed the highest hay yield with 596.52 kg/da. Intermediate wheatgrass in pure stand yielded 612.87 kg/da hay, while in the mixture of 20 % cicer milkvetch + 80 % intermediate wheatgrass produced the greatest hay yield with 631.98 kg/da. Cicer milkvetch, the pure stands of crested wheatgrass and intermediate wheatgrass had the dry matter yields of 116.51, 514.99 and 587.83 kg/da, respectively. In mixtures of crested wheatgrass, the mixture made up 40 % cicer milkvetch + 60 % crested wheatgrass possessed the highest dry matter yield as 571.96 kg/da, whereas the greatest dry matter yield of intermediate wheatgrass as 603.01 kg/da was obtained from the mixture of 20 % cicer milkvetch + 80 % intermediate wheatgrass. In the mixtures of cicer milkvetch, crested wheatgrass and intermediate wheatgrass, the crude protein contents were 12.22, 5.54 and 6.34 %, respectively. When grown as pure stand, they had the crude protein yield as 8.69, 37.37 and 50.16 kg/da, respectively. In the mixtures of crested wheatgrass, the greatest crude protein yield with 36.21 kg/da was realized in mixture of 40 % cicer milkvetch + 60 % crested wheatgrass. In the mixtures of intermediate wheatgrass the highest crude protein yield with 40.59 kg/da was obtained from the mixture of 80 % cicer milkvetch + 20 % intermediate wheatgrass. Herbage yields of cicer milkvetch and intermediate wheatgrass were significantly and positively correlated to the crude protein (r= 0.983** and r= 0.999** respectively) and dry matter (r= 0.983** and r= 0.999** respectively) yields, and the hay yield of crested wheatgrass wassignificantly and positively associated with dry matter yields (r= 0.964** ). The results of the path analysis clearly indicated that the greatest total correlation coefficient occurred in cicer milkvetch (0.983) between the hay and crude protein yields, and between the hay and dry matter yields, whereas it happened in crested wheatgrass and intermediate wheatgrass between hay and dry matter yields (0.964 and 0.999, respectively). The determination coefficients (R2) of cicer milkvetch, crested wheatgrass and intermediate wheatgrass were found as 0.980, 0.969 and 0.999 respectively. The determination coefficients are very high that results the choosed characters for this research are suitable and sufficient The result of this research, the highest hay and crude protein yields were obtained from the mixtures of 20 % cicer milkvetch + 80 % intermediate wheatgrass and 80 % cicer milkvetch + 20 % intermediate wheatgrass, respectively. In the mixtures of crested wheatgras, the mixture consisted of 40 % cicer milkvetch + 60 % crested wheatgrass possessed the highest hay yield and the greatest crude protein yield was realized in mixture of 40 % cicer milkvetch + 60 % crested wheatgrass.
