A positive, culturally responsive, accountability based, and non-punitive approach to decrease challenging behavior in school

El Manssouri, Abe This Mixed- methods pilot study aimed to research, identify, and test interventions that could be used systematically by teachers, administrators, and schools to minimize challenging behavior and curb its effects. The research question investigated in this study is as follows: How can educators use a positive, culturally responsive, and non-punitive approach to decrease challenging behavior and elevate student performance while maintaining accountability in schools? The primary intervention tested in this study is the use of positive and culturally responsive learning materials as a disabling mechanism of challenging behavior. The research also seeks to evaluate students’ and teachers’ perceptions of the Positive Accountability Model (PAM), which is a multiplex system –developed by the researcher- that schools and districts can systematically use to replace their punitive discipline systems. While it is statistically difficult to generalize the results of this study to project over the general population due to the convenience sampling and the sample size, the interventions introduced in this study yielded major academic and behavioral gains for the participants. Most notably, the participants’ SAEBRS scores, GPA, absence, and tardiness. The researcher recommends future studies with random sampling and a larger sample size to be able to generalize the outcomes of the intervention.
