My ancestors’ wildest dream : How classroom management strategies from around the globe help us decrease the rates of suspensions and expulsions of Black students in the United States
Abstract
dc:descriptionColeman, Ava Most educators agree that classroom management is complicated, stressful, and sometimes extremely difficult. The U.S. Department of Education (2016) released a study reporting that Black children are suspended three times more often than their white counterparts. Considering that Gloria Ladson-Billings (1995) published her work on culturally relevant teaching more than 20 years ago, we should not have this issue today. A solution to this issue is to implement classroom management strategies that honor Black culture. If we learn how to be proactive about behaviors that may lead to suspensions, referrals, and negative parent phone calls, everyone in the classroom will benefit. I used a qualitative approach for this study; data were collected in interviews from teachers across the globe detailing classroom management practices implemented in their indigenous classrooms. The data is cross-referenced with the strategies implemented by these teachers. The goal of this research is to examine practical strategies in order for teachers who work with Black children to improve classroom management techniques. This transformative research project highlights multiple cultural norms and strategies that can decrease the rates of suspensions, referrals, and negative parental contact.
