Sergei Rachmaninoff: Understanding the Composer Through the Etudes-Tableaux, OP. 33

Rachmaninoff's stylistic identity, as well as that of any composer, can be perceived through an examination of the compositional devices which he tends to use repeatedly. The choice and re-use of a particular element or device obviously appeals to a composer and to him seems to be most successful and effective. These inherent compositional traits of every composer help project individuality as though the composer indeed signed his own name in the music. In the Etudes-Tableaux, Rachmaninoff consistently employs specific compositional elements which contribute to the creation of his unique musical signature. By examining these aspects in the Etudes-Tableaux, many of the stylistic characteristics which permeate Rachmaninoff's piano music are revealed.
