Sinkholes in the marble and dolostone karst of Sylacauga, Alabama
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe hypothesis of this study is that sinkhole occurrence is being anthropogenically accelerated or induced in the study area. The objectives of this research are: - to identify natural conditions in the study area which are associated in the literature with sinkhole development - to identify the study area's human activities, both current and historic, which are cited in the literature as being associated with accelerated sinkhole subsidence - to determine if the study area contains zones particularly susceptible to sinkhole occurrence - to associate causative factors as identified in the literature with any sinkhole-prone zones that may be identified in the study area.
