Utterances and Questions in Informational Book Read Aloud and Science Activity Sessions
Abstract
dc:description.abstractUtterances and questions were recorded and transcribed from a total of 10 informational text read aloud and 10 science activity sessions, across four science topics, with 15 third graders in five groups of three students. The overlying questions in the study were: What will the frequency of utterances be for the two treatments? What types of utterances will the students make? How many questions will the students ask during the two treatments? What type of questions will they ask? The findings showed the students made more utterances while participating in science activities. The categories of utterances were similar for the informational text read alouds and the science activity sessions. The students asked a comparable number of questions for both treatments. Lastly, the findings reveal students engaged in more lower level thinking as seen by the larger number of basic information questions posed over that of higher level questions in both informational book read aloud and science activity sessions.
