A New Wind Band Edition of Ferdinand David's Concertino Op. 4 for Trombone
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe purpose of this document is to present a new edition of an existing work for the wind band, transcribed from the original orchestral version. Ferdinand David’s Concertino Op. 4 is a substantial work for trombone performers and is a part of their standard repertoire. The new edition will allow for more performance opportunities and add to the wind band repertoire, as only two known editions of this concertino currently exist.Trombone soloists have lamented that existing arrangements of the David Concertino have inherent weaknesses. These include writing for multiple instruments that will produce a sound louder than the soloist, writing a literal transfer of string parts into the wind instruments creating non-idiomatic passages, and writing too thin of a texture to produce a viable accompanying voice for the trombone player. This version aims to address these flaws. The written portion of this document discusses the transcription and the creative choices made to help enhance the work. Furthermore, the document provides insight into what transcriptions are and how terms have become analogous with present-day arrangements. Lastly, the work intends to add to the ever-growing wind medium and to keep revitalizing the transcription as a standard genre for wind bands.
