Nursing Faculty's Awareness and Knowledge About Suicidality in Black Nursing Students: a Qualitative Study

Forty-seven thousand five hundred people died by suicide in the United States making it the 10th leading cause of death (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2019; National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], 2019). Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 10- to 34-year-olds in the U.S. (Bridge et al., 2018; CDC, 2018; Horwitz et al., 2020). It is the third leading cause of death for Black female and male teenagers and young adults (Busbyet al., 2019). Until now, little importance has been given to suicidal ideation in Black college students (Busby et al., 2019). There is a gap in the research on suicidal behaviors among Black college students in the U. S. (Goodwill & Zhou, 2020). Black nursing students experience perceived burdensome, thwarted belonging, defeat/entrapment, and hopelessness which increase their risk of suicidal ideation and suicide (Goodwill & Zhou, 2020; Montgomery et al., 2021;Moore et al., 2019; Young-Brice & Dreifuerst, 2020). During the literature review for this study, I found no literature or research on nursing faculty's awareness and knowledge of suicidality in Black nursing students. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to examine or explore nursing faculty's awareness and knowledge about Black nursing students with suicidality. The findings in this study showed that nursing faculty is not aware or knowledgeable about suicidality among Black nursing students in their programs. However, the nursing faculty reported that they gained awareness and knowledge during the study and action plans were made to implement in their programs of study. The findings also yielded implications for practice and recommendations for future research.
