Perception and Performance on the Prevention Management of Peripheral Intravenous Therapy Complications

Abstract

dc:description

The purpose of this study is to investigate a nurses perception of the importance in the prevention management of the peripheral intravenous therapy complications(PITC) and their performance for it. Also, to provide basic data necessary in prevention management of the PITC, and basic data for both education programs and the standardized guidance of intravenous therapy. The subjects of this study were 270 clinical nurses. Who performed the intravenous therapy in their medical, surgical and intensive care units. Data were collected between Dec. 1st and Dec. 30th, using the measuring instrument created by Mo, Moon Hee (2006). The collected data were analyzed using an SPSS Window Ver. 12.0. The results of this study are as follows. 1) The perception degree of the prevention management of PITC was 3.20, lower than the nursing performance of 3.29. 2) After investigating the perception level of the prevention management of PITC, it has been found that air embolism, pulmonary edema, occlusion, phlebitis, speed shock, catheter embolism, hematoma, infiltration, extravasation, septicemia and venous spasm were rated 3.46, 3.39, 3.29, 3.28, 3.28, 3.27, 3.20, 3.16, 3.13, 3.09, 2.66 respectively. 3) After investigating the performance level of the prevention management of PITC, it has been found that air embolism, pulmonary edema, occlusion, phlebitis, speed shock, catheter embolism, hematoma, infiltration, extravasation, septicemia and venous spasm were rated 3.62, 3.51, 3.50, 3.49, 3.36, 3.36, 3.33, 3.23, 3.19, 3.12, 2.60 respectively. 4) The level of perception of the importance in prevention management of PITC, according to the general characteristics of the nurses, showed significant differences regarding the working departments (E=5.944, P=.003) with the higher result in ICU than in medical department. 5) The level of performance for the prevention management of PITC in accordance with the general characteristics of the nurses, also showed significant differences regarding age (r=-2.40, p=.017). Those over 25 years old had higher level of performance than people under 25. 6) The perception of the importance in prevention management of PITC indicated the meaningful correlations with the performance for prevention management of PITC (r=.606, p<.001). In conclusion, with the results of the correlations between the perception of the prevention management of PITC and the performance for it, the higher level of perception of the prevention management of PITC was found to lead the better performance for it. Suggesting much higher perception of PITC than in the past should result in better nursing performance. Therefore, the more attentive development of education programs required, following the analysis of lower recognition elements in preventing & managing PITC and the incessant education and feedback should be given for preventin management of PITC.
