The Effects of Self-Management Program on Self-efficacy and Quality of Life for Women with Rheumatoid Arthritis

The purpose of this study, a quasi-experimental study using a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design, was to examine the effect of Self-management program on self-efficacy and Quality of life for women with rheumatoid arthritis. In this study, a survey on 31 patients experimental group of 15 patients and control group of 16 patients sampling an adjacent population at random - who were operated on the rheumatoid arthritis and were in the A university hospital located in Suwon between Jul 07 2007 and Sep 15 2007. 16 subjects in the control group received no intervention and 15 subjects in experimental group received Self-Management program cooperating with a speciality lecturer in doing it during 6 weeks, for 2 or 2 hours 30 minutes, weekly on Fridays between Jul 13 2007 and Aug 17 2007. In order to verify the effects of the Self management program, Self-efficacy and Quality of Life as the dependent variables, were measured. For analyzing the data, the SPSS/Window 12.0 program was used. As the analysis method, t-test and Chi-square test were used for the similarity examination of the general trait and dependent variable, and t-test was used for the assumption examination. The results were as follows: 1. Hypothesis 1 "Self-efficacy would be improved in the test group given Self-management program control group not given." was accepted with statistical significance(t=2.418, p=.022). 2. Hypothesis 2 "Quality of Life would be improved in the test group given Self-management program control group not given." was accepted with statistical significance(t=2.308, p=.028). In conclusion, this study revealed that the Self-Management program was an important factor that can improve Self-efficacy and Quality of life for women with rheumatoid arthritis. Therefore, it is considered that Self-management program can be used as an efficient nursing intervention for women patient with rheumatoid arthritis.
