Association of Alcohol Consumption with Verbal Memory and Visuospatial Memory in Older Adults: Multi-Center Study of Memory Impairment Clinics

Abstract

dc:description

As there is no available remedy to restore the sacrificed or reduced cognition functions once the cognitive disorder arises, it is very important to identify the risk factors and to find the preventive measures in cognition disorders among the aged. The purpose of this study was to provide the basic research material in the prevention of cognition disorders, by identifying the status of alcohol consumption in the aged and the relationship between verbal memory and visuospatial memory impairment. The subjects were 1,572 aged persons (489 male, 1,083 female) of age 60 to 90 years old, who participated in the Clinical Research Center for Dementia of South Korea. The subjects completed the neuropsychological assessment and health survey from 2008 to 2012. The alcohol consumption was classified as abstainer, mild to moderate drinker(≤7 drinks per week), and heavy drinker (≥8drinks per week). For the assessment of verbal memory, immediate recall, delayed recall, and recognition of Seoul Verbal Learning Test were used. For the visuospatial memory assessment, immediate recall, delayed recall, and recognition of Rey Complex Figure Test were used. Additionally, when the performance of each memory was less than 16 percentile (lessthan–1standard deviation), the cases were defined as verbal memory impairment and visuospatial memory impairment, respectively. Hierarchical logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association of drinking status and memory impairment. When the association between drinking status and memory impairment was analyzed, those who consumed alcohol moderately had lower risk of verbal memory impairment than abstainers (p<0.05). However, visuospatial memory did not have significant association with alcohol consumption. These findings may suggest the possibility that light to moderate alcohol consumption in the elderly would reduce the risk of verbal memory impairment. A longitudinal study is warranted to empirically investigate the causal relationship between drinking habit and memory impairment in the elderly.
