Effects of the participatory-learning method on sex-related

Abstract

dc:description

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of 'teacher-centered class' (widely used at present in elementary schools) & 'activity-based class' (making program by writer). The subjects of this study were 128 sample in H elementary school in the I city. The study consisted of 64 students in experimental group (activity-based class) and 64 students in control group(teacher-centered class). This study used a quasi-experiment research design with pretest-posttest nonequivalent control-group design, to compare sex-related knowledge and attitude between two groups. Using measurement was 'sex education instrument (developer : Yang Soon Ok and others)' adding 10 extra questions. There were 25 questions for sex-related knowledge and attitude respectively. The data were analyzed to test causal relationship. The data were collected from 5th March 2012 to 27th July 2012 and analyzed with SPSS for Window (version 18.0). The data were analyzed general properties of the answers using descriptive statistic method, and analyzed the same quality verification between the general properties and the research factors using X2- test, Fisher's exact test & t-test. Research hypothesis was 'The experimental group (activity-based class) receives higher points of sex-related knowledge and attitude than the control group (teacher-centered class). The author verified the point gap of sex-related knowledge and attitude between the experimental group and the control group, which was tested before and after applying this program by independent t-test. The result showed that after the sex education program, the point of sex-related knowledge and attitude in all groups increased. However, the control group showed higher sex knowledge point (t=-2.325, p=.022) than the experimental group. And then experimental group showed higher sex attitude points (t=4.686, p=.001)than the control group. In conclusion, this study showed that developing the sex education program reflected by teaching method based on educational contents was effective for elementary school students. Also the study result to continue suggested to follow-up studies to test the effect of sex education and positive changes toward sex-related attitudes.
