The Effects of Walking before Colonoscopy on Colon Cleansing and Discomfort

This is a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent, post-test, control study to investigate the effects of walking before colonoscopy on colon cleansing and discomfort. A total of 133 patients who scheduled for colonoscopy to be performed at Ajou university hospital in Suwon, South Korea were randomly allocated to an experimental group (n=65) and a control group (n=67). Before undergoing colonoscopy, an usual education program of bowel preparation alone was implemented in control group, while both usual education program and additional 3,000 steps walking was performed in the experimental group. Colon cleansing was evaluated during the colonoscopic procedure by a gastroenterologist, using checklists for the Estimation of Colonic Bowel Cleansing. A degree of colon cleansing was assessed to see the colonoscopic video by another gastroenterologist. Discomfort including nausea, vomiting and retching was evaluated using questionaires. The data was analyzed using Chi-square, Fisher's test, and t-test with a SPSS 18.0 statistical program and deciphering video, inter-observer reliability was evaluated using the Kappa coefficient. The results of this study was as follows; 1) After walking in the experimental group, the colon cleansing was significantly better, as compared with the control group (33.8% vs 17.9%, p <0.05). 2) After walking in the experimental group, the symptom of vomiting was significantly decreased as compared with the control group (7.7% vs 20.9%, p<0.05). 3) The ingestion time of colon lavage solution was significantly shorter in the experimental group, as compared with the control group (187 min vs 273 min, p <0.001). In conclusion, the walking before undergoing colonoscopy improved the degree of colon cleansing and the symptom of vomiting, reducing the ingestion time of colon lavage solution. Therefore, walking can be used as a effective nursing intervention in patients undergoing colonoscopy.
