The Impact of a Working Exercise Program on Perceived Health Condition and Emotional State in Elderly
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe purpose of this study was identify the effects of working exercxise program on perceived health condition and emotional state in elderly. The design of research was Nonequivalent Control Group pre-test and post-test design. The subject was 31 elderly in experimental group and 32 in control group, all of whom was 65~75 years old and live in Y-city, Kyonggi-do. The exercise intensity was 40%~60% of the target heart-rate by Karvonen's method and maintained by the heart-rate monitor. The exercise period was six weeks from July 12 to August 20, 2004 and the exercise frequency was three times per week. The exercise duration was fifty minutes at first and gradually increased up to an hour. The data are analyzed by the X²-test, one-way ANOVA according to the purposes of research using SPSS/Window version 11.0. The results are as follows: 1. The perceived health condition after working exercise improved significantly compared to before the working exercise(t=-2.604, p=.014). 2. The emotional state after working exercise improved significantly compared to before the working exercise(t=-3.492, p=.002). In anxiety-depression(t=-2.233, p=.032) and vigor(t=-4.25, p=.000), there are significant difference. In angor(t=-2.00, p=.055), there is no significantly difference. In this study, the effect of walking exercise program on the perceived health condition and emotional state in the elderly was evaluated. Through the walking exercise program, the improvement of health and mood will contribute to the independent and better life of elderly.
