The Use of Resorabable Plates for the Fixation of Mandubular Fractures

dc:descriptionThe body of literature on biodegradable materials goes back more than 40 years. In oral and maxillofacial surgery, resorbable materials were first tested in animal studies and later used clinically in humans for fixation in traum and orthognathic surgery. A few publication reports the internal fixation of human mandibular fractures with biodegradable self-reinforced poly-L-lactide(SR-PLLA) plates and screws. Metallic bone plates and screws have been commonly used in oral and maxillofacial surgery for internal fixation. However, there are several disadvantages such as atrophy of cortical bone inherent to excessive rigid fixation systems, growth disturbance in growing individual, allergy reaction, interference with radiographic imaging, palpability. To overcome these disadvantages, there have been many studies of biodegradable plates and screws. We have undertaken a retrospective study on 44 patients in Dept. of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Ajou University Hospital from January 2006 to May 2007. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of biodegradable plates for mandibular fractures. we concluded following results. 1. 1 case(4.41%) of the 53 operation sites(44 patients) experienced complications. 1 case was a postoperative infection. 2. Postoperative infection, inflammation were completely recovered with incision and drainage, and antibiotic medications. 3. Biodegradable plates provide reliable stability when used for the fixaion of mandibular fractures.
