Association of Proximal Femoral Geometry with Osteoporotic Proximal Femur Fracture in Elderly Koreans

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies demonstrated a relationship between proximal femoral geometry and the risk of hip fracture, but there is relatively little information about the association of these measurements with hip fracture in Korean. Our study assessed the relationship between femur geometry and hip fracture and evaluated the geometric factors related to hip fracture in elderly Korean. METHODS: 51 proximal femoral fracture patients aged 60 or older were compared to 51 non fracture control subjects aged 60 or older. We measured their bone mineral density (BMD) and femoral geometry using dual X-ray absorptiometry (Lunar Prodigy DXA system, GE, Healthcare). RESULTS: Hip axis length (HAL) was significantly higher in those with proximal femoral fracture, and femur strength index (FSI) was significantly lower in the fracture group. The fracture discrimination improved when HAL and FSI variables were combined with BMD measurements CONCLUSION: Femur geometries such as HAL, FSI can be significant predictors of hip fracture.
