Abstract
dc:descriptionBackground and PURPOSE: The RFID (Radiofrequency Identification)system that operated under the ultra high frequency(UHF) band, is advanced important technology in a variety of fields. A RFID system appreciate the objects through wireless communication with tags by harvesting enerty from the electromagnetic field, which have an unique ID and information, and are attached to objects, animals and humans. In korea, the frequency band of the UHF RFID is 908.5~914MHz. Use of electromagnetic field such as electronic production and mobile phones have been increasing day by day. Therefore, concern about the potential human health harmful effect of exposure to radiofrequency radiation. Many studies have been research on possible effects of radiofrequency in vitro, in vivo and epidemiologic research. However, available data are insufficient and controversiality. In this study, we exposed rats to a RFID electromagnetic field and evaluated the RFID field harmful effect as a melatonin, serotonin and thyroid hormones and immune system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We established a reverberation chamber for 900MHz RFID radiation to the whole body of Sprague-Dawlye (SD) male rat. In this chamber, rats were exposed radiofrequency at different SAR value, exposure time and exposure period. We performed take a specimen and GC-MS(Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry), Chemiluminescent immunoassay(CLIA), Hematology analyzer, FACS(Fluorescence activated cell sorter analysis), Hematoxylin-Eosin staining to evaluated the RFID radiation effects. RESULTS: All rats were examined weekly weight. No body weight change was observed in any exposure group. No significant differences in melatonin and serotonin levels were observed between the groups and various exposure condition and dose not change pineal gland morphology. In thyroid gland experiments, we could observe significant change only in thyroxine concentration on SAR value 2W/kg, 8h/day exposure for 4weeks exposure condition. On cell-mediated immune system, no significant differences were seen in neutrophil, monocyte, T4/T8 ratio. The number of eosinophil and basophil was significantly decreased on SAR value 1W/kg, 1h/day exposure for 2weeks exposure condition. And the number of white blood cell and lymphocyte was significantly decreased on both 2weeks and 4weeks exposure period at SAR value 2W/kg exposure condition. CONCLUSION: Exposure to 900MHz RFID was partly altered Exposure to 900MHz RFID was partly changed factor of biological parameters. These changes are considered as a part of compensatory homeostatic response to the electromagnetic stress; as the changed values were still within the range of physiologic value limit, even though these are statistically significant.
