Lateral Distribution and Recurrence of Ovarian Endometrioma

Abstract

dc:description

OBJECTIVE: The main target of this study is to evaluate the correlation between the lateral distribution and recurrence of ovarian endometrioma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 371 patients who were diagnosed as ovarian endometrioma through pathology in Ajou University Hospital during from May 1994 to Apr. 2007 were retrospectively studied. The characteristics of ovarian endometrioma according to primary side of ovarian endometrioma were analysed. RESULTS: Patients characteristic such as age at diagnosis, gravity, parity, age at menarche, mean pretreatment CA-125, r AFS stage, type of operation, laterality of ovarian endometrioma, mean tumor diameter and postoperative hormonal treatment were analyzed. It showed that the relationship between the disease recurrence and side of primary endometrioma(p value =0.461) was statistically insignificant. The side of recurrence tend to develop the same side of primary ovarian endometrioma(p value =0.005). Type of surgery didn't affect to the recurrent rate(p value <0.998). However, postoperative treatment influenced the recurrent rate(p value <0.047). CONCLUSIONS: Primary endometrioma tends to develop on the left side, whereas the side of recurrence doesn't follow this tendency.
