Strabismus and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Trait in children

Abstract

dc:description

PURPOSE: To report the prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity trait in strabismus children comparing with non-strabismus children and the variables that affect the extent of attention deficit hyperactivity trait. METHODS: A 19-question Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) scale with additional questions about medical background, history of strabismus, family history of strabismus and parents’ opinion about the relations between the strabismus and the daily activity of the patient was provided to the parents of children with strabismus. Clinical data, including measures of visual acuity, angle of deviation and refractory error were also recorded. The parents of children whom have not diagnosed strabismus before, were provided with the same questionaire for the control group. RESULTS: One hundred forty-one strabismus patients were investigated, and 137 surveys on non-strabismus children were collected. There were no differences in distribution of sex and age between two groups. ADHD was more suspicious in the strabismus group(33.33%) than non-strabismus group(5.11%). The difference of prevalence is clinically significant. Male shows dominance in the prevalence of suspicious ADHD compared to female.(p=0.00) Other ophthalmic variables and demographic features was not correlated with the ADHD rating scale scores. CONCLUSIONS: Attention deficit hyperactivity was more observed in strabismus-group compared to non-strabismus group. Not only variables for visual function but also psychosocial problems effect on the extent of attention deficit hyperactivity trait.
